Fixing Your Freezer
No one wants to deal with a broken freezer, but it is bound to happen. It can be extremely helpful for you (if you plan on doing the repairs yourself) or for the repair technician that you call in. Here are some of the most common issues people face with their freezers and the causes.
It won't start. This problem is commonly linked to the start relay, thermostat, or the start capacitor. You will need to be able to test these parts in order to figure out which one is the source.
Frost is building up. When the thermostat, defrost timer, or the gasket around the door are broken or malfunctioning, frost can begin to build up in the freezer.
It is making weird noises. A malfunctioning motor or fan blade is likely going to be the source of the weird noises coming from your freezer. In order to repair your freezer, you need to have a knowledge of the different parts and what each part does.
The freezer is too cold. The optimal temperature for your freezer is going to be just under 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If the thermostat, temperature control, or user control are broken or malfunctioning, the freezer can run much colder than the optimal temperature.
The freezer won't stop running. In order to figure out why this is happening, you will need to inspect and test the timer, temperature control, and the defrost thermostat.
The freezer is too warm. Just as if the freezer is too cold, you will need to inspect and test the thermostat, user control, and the defrost timer. This is an important problem to fix so that the food in the freezer doesn't end up thawing out and spoiling.
The freezer is leaking water. This may seem like a simple problem, but it is actually a lot more complicated than people believe. All refrigerators expel water that comes from melting ice and condensation. In a functioning freezer, this water is drained out of the freezer. If the drainage system isn't working, this can cause pools of water to form inside the freezer or on the floor.
Another source to consider is if your refrigerator model comes with a built-in water dispenser. There is a water supply line that is going to feed water to the dispenser. You will need to check these lines to make sure that it is not leaking. Check the inlet valve to make sure that the compression nuts are tight and not broken.
You may need to replace the plastic or copper tubes in the freezer. These tubes are fitted to the saddle and inlet valve with compression fittings.
Lastly, and most simply, the refrigerator may be sitting on a surface that isn't level. There is a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator that catches the excess water. Once the water is in this pan, it will just evaporate. If the fridge is on an unlevel surface, the water can spill out of the pan and form a puddle on the floor.
